Banana Peels and Pork Strips Earn Ig Nobel Honors

The winners of this year’s Ig Nobel Prizes have been announced, and included among them are a team studying the slipperiness of banana peels, another investigating the ability of pork strips to stop nosebleeds, and yet another gauging how reindeer react to humans in polar bear suits. The aforementioned honorees took home the physics, medicine, and arctic science prizes, respectively. The award in public health went to a team investigating whether it is mentally hazardous to own a cat, while the psychology award went to a team that found that night owls tend to be more psychopathic than early risers. Nunavut Day

Canada’s northernmost territory of Nunavut was established on July 9, 1993, through a land claim signed by the national government and the Inuit of the Nunavut Settlement Area. Most of the day’s activities take place in Nunavut’s hub and capital city, Iqaluit. Festivities include barbeques, parades, traditional Inuit games, and feasts featuring local cuisine of caribou, walrus, and arctic char. “Yeti” DNA Points to Polar Bear Relative

Most scholars reject the existence of the yeti, a large, hairy, humanoid creature reputed to inhabit theHimalayas, but a respected British geneticist believes there may be something to the stories. He tested hair samples collected from two unidentified animals purported to be yetis and matched the DNA to that of an ancient polar bear jawbone from Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago north of the Arctic Circle, that dates back 40,000 to 120,000 years. This, he says, could mean that an as-yet-unidentified bear species, perhaps some sort of brown bear-polar bear hybrid, resides in the region and is behind at least some yeti sightings.More… Discuss
