Something Fishy

Something Fishy

Scientists have debunked the popular myth that fish have poor memories, training African cichlid fish to go to one end of a tank for food. Even after 12 days, the fish demonstrated that they remembered their training. And when trained to associate the other end of the tank with food, they were able to override the previous training and form a new memory. More… Discuss

Schutzengelfest

Schutzengelfest

Schutzengelfest is a religious and social occasion in northern Switzerland observed since the 17th century. Its setting is the Wildkirchli, or “chapel in the wild,” a cave in the Alpstein mountain range in the Appenzell Innerrhoden Canton. A Capuchin monk decided in 1621 that the cave was an ideal place for mountain worship. Today, the festival starts at 10 a.m., when a priest or monk from Appenzell conducts the worship service. Then, a yodelers‘ choir gives a festive concert, and participants start walking to the villages of Ebenalp or Aescher for feasting and dancing. More… Discuss

Why all the struggle? poetic thought by George-B (©Always)

Do we really want change,
do we really need it:
when brought about by…
The king of darkness?
Can’t we do with things the way they are,
slowly dissolving into the ocean of time?
Just evolving into involution,
return to the wisdom of the cave dwellers,
Before fire was noticed by the clan chief?
Isn’t that satisfying enough?
Why all the struggle?

Philately

Philately

Philately is the collection and study of postage stamps and of materials relating to their history. People began collecting postage stamps soon after the first one was issued in 1840, and the scholarly study of stamps—their history and details like watermarks, perforations, and cancellations—followed within decades. Though their primary purpose is to provide proof of postage payment, stamps also serve as a sort of historic record. What was philately called before the term was coined in 1864? More… Discuss

Censorship, poetic thought by George-B)
(the smudge and other poems)

We all value things – essentially worthless –
We make them valuable as they rot into forgetfulness
Gold medals, rings, and pocket watches
Old coins, now not currency,
We all give them extrinsic value
Dry flowers, pressed between the pages
Of out of print volumes, and censured volumes
And put to death volumes, by scorching fire, bonfire of volumes
Dangerously truthful to truth volumes, and tomes of many,
many writings in languages forgotten to time itself,
Witchcraft manuals and other books and manuscripts,
and philosophies we agree not with…
All becoming ash and smoke on the bonfire of un-appealable volumes…

Promises, promises, poetic thought by George-B

Promises, promises, poetic thought by George-B

A promise I made
To myself
I will not be bored
I will learn to not be bored
To find the elements in
Things
People
Water
Air
Dirt
Fire
That will be interesting
Enough
Not to bore me
To look for antiboring-antiboring-anti
Behavior
thumb sucking
Smoking whatever
Drinking to unbore
And immature mature relationships
Turning to be boring now I
Walk away from boring
And get fit as I walk, and now
I can tell what’s boring
I can unbore and stay that way
Way to go

I’m on my way…

Bone of Time, poetic thought by George-B (©Always)

Bone of Time, poetic thought by George-B (©Always)

I’m sitting in this old place
Sometimes,
Thinking about myself,
Imagining myself being
A few years younger,
Still in the safety of the 20th
Century, one hundred years, passed now,
The safety of the memories past …
The memorialistic past, pass double dance of the safe past,
When things turned out okay, and I survived that day and
That and this, days and nights and
sometimes mornings and afternoons,
boring times extraneously boring times of nothing but boredom,
and more boredom and
sometimes the “Hi How are you?”, “Great, thanks…’n how are you?”…

Yes I’m thinking sometimes of the safety of the memories past,
of the 20th century, with more substance on the bone of time,
and less of a hatchet to grind,
with less militantism, and more substance
on the bone of humanity,
on the bone of history,
on the etherical memories of the past.

YouTube Copyright Basics (Global)…. actually it is Google’s policy, going so far as to deny the owner recopying! your own work!

but still: the denial of any other video format, except for the ever-so-slow and cumbersome flash (I would say down the toilet) is retardingly slow, no matter what the ISP speed is!  But again is very protective of the profits, google (uyoutube) make from denying even owner (creators) of the work to download their own youtube published videos, and comment: So tell me : WHO”S THE OWNER OF YOUR WORK NOW,  HA? The Old City, poetic thought by George -B

The Old City, poetic thought by George -B

The window is opened toward a city,
A city that’s built for millennia,
layers of generations,
as dust of time settled upon itself…
The city’s old,
and so are most of its buildings,
kept alive by people who care, by fires,
and wars and bullets,
by rain, snow and heat waves –
The city only grew stronger,
Surviving survival…
And yet something’s missing, lost to the ages
The laughter of children, the play of the squirrels
The thrills of the singing of birds…
The silent past conquered the noise
and reigns now, in absolute power…

A dove on the windowsill is mourning his lover.

The Symphony No. 8 in G major, Op. 88, B. 163, is a symphony by Antonín Dvořák, composed in 1889 at Vysoká u Příbramě, Bohemia, on the occasion of his election to the Bohemian Academy of Science, Literature and Arts. Dvořák conducted the premiere in Prague on 2 February 1890. In contrast to other symphonies of both the composer and the period, the music is cheerful and optimistic

The symphony is in four movements:

  1. Allegro con brio (G major)
  2. Adagio (C minor)
  3. Allegretto grazioso – Molto vivace (G minor)
  4. Allegro ma non troppo (G major)

The work is scored for 2 flutes (2nd doubling piccolo)*, 2 oboes (1st doubling english horn)*, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, and strings.[1]

The orchestration of piccolo and English Horn is unusual in this symphony. The piccolo only sustains a long note in unison with the flute at the exposition of the 1st movement and the English Horn only plays a short, but exposed phrase during the second recapitulation of the main “bird call” theme, also in the 1st movement. In some editions the 2nd oboe doubles on English horn rather than the 1st oboe as indicated in most scores.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY: FERRUCCIO LAMBORGHINI (1916)

Ferruccio Lamborghini (1916)

Lamborghini was a successful Italian tractor manufacturer and sports car enthusiast who founded a luxury car company in 1963, allegedly after a spat with Enzo Ferrari. The story goes that Lamborghini was dissatisfied with the clutch in one of his Ferraris and voiced this to Enzo Ferrari, who dismissed the complaints as those of a mere tractor maker. Infuriated, Lamborghini decided to retaliate by creating his own superior sports car. Why did he choose the image of a bull for his company’s logo? More… Discuss

REGINA SPEKTOR LYRICS

“The Sword & The Pen”

Don’t let me get out of this kiss
Don’t let me say what I say
The things that scare us today
what if they happen someday
Don’t let me out of your arms
For now

What if the sword kills the pen
What if the god kills the man
And if he does it with love
Well then it’s death from above
And death from above is still a death

I don’t want to live without you
I don’t want to live without you
I don’t want to live
I don’t want to live
Without you

For those who still can recall
The desperate colors of fall
The sweet caresses of May
Only in poems remain
No one recites them these days
For the shame

So what if nothing is safe
So what if no one is saved
No matter how sweet
No matter how brave
What if each to his own lonely grave

I don’t want to live without you
I don’t want to live without you
I don’t want to live
I don’t want to live
Without you

ARTICLE: SNAKES

Snakes

Snakes are scaly, cold-blooded, carnivorous reptiles related to lizards. They tend to be limbless and move by muscular contraction. Though they have razor-sharp teeth, they do not chew their prey but instead swallow it whole with the help of a loosely attached jaw. Because their bodies are tubular, some paired organs must be staggered within the body, and one of the two lungs is generally non-functional and sometimes even absent. Why are snakes associated with healing and medicine? More… Discuss

Adventurer Account, by George-B

Adventurer Account, by George-B

I have been walking Northbound
until there was no mere North to go to
and then I took the opposite direction,
found myself upside down hanging by
the branches of the Southern tree…
I was by exhausted,
hungry,
unshaven…
So I took a long rest
next day
I started west, and kept at it, for a while
and then I hit a bump in the road
at Greenwich
and had to heal my foot…
Then I considered continuing my walk
same direction

Late that year I draw a conclusion

and build a house of red bricks,
a picket fence
a kidney bean pool
a tennis court
a trail with 5 flights of stairs, wooden,
to the sandy beach.

Brave – Sara Bareilles (Lyrics)

SARA BAREILLES LYRICS

“Brave”

You can be amazing
You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
You can be the outcast
Or be the backlash of somebody’s lack of love
Or you can start speaking up
Nothing’s gonna hurt you the way that words do
When they settle ‘neath your skin
Kept on the inside and no sunlight
Sometimes a shadow wins
But I wonder what would happen if you

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave

Everybody’s been there,
Everybody’s been stared down by the enemy
Fallen for the fear
And done some disappearing,
Bow down to the mighty
Don’t run, just stop holding your tongue
Maybe there’s a way out of the cage where you live
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in
Show me how big your brave is

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

And since your history of silence
Won’t do you any good,
Did you think it would?
Let your words be anything but empty
Why don’t you tell them the truth?

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
See you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you

I just wanna see you

NEWS: THE WHY OF THE V

The Why of the V

Researchers believe they now have a definitive answer for why birds so often fly in a V formation. Scientists fitted a flock of northern bald ibises with monitors that record each bird’s position, speed, and heading in flight as well as every wing flap. The data show that each bird positions itself and times its flapping to take maximal advantage of the upwash—upward moving air—generated by the bird ahead of it. As a bird flies forward, itpushes air downward beneath its wings, but at its wingtips the air is actually pushed upward. The V formation thus allows birds to conserve energy and increase their flying range. More… Discuss

The Steam Donkey

The steam donkey is the strangely named auxiliary steam engine used for hoisting or pumping, especially on a ship. The name “steam donkey” comes from its origin in sailing ships, where the “donkey” engine was typically used to load and unload cargo and raise the larger sails. Patented in 1882, the steam donkey became a key tool for the logging industry as well, but its popularity waned with the advent of diesel-powered equipment. Though often associated with skydivers, a free fall in physics is any motion of a body upon which gravity is the only force acting—such as a ball thrown up in the air. THIS DAY IN THE YESTERYEAR: “CQD” DISTRESS SIGNAL ADOPTED (1904)

“CQD” was one of the first Morse code distress signals adopted for radio use. The Marconi Marine Communication Company began using it in 1904, but by 1908, “CQD” had largely been supplanted by “SOS,” a simpler code. Contrary to popular belief, “CQD” does not stand for “Come Quick, Danger” or “Come Quickly: Distress.” Rather, it combines the call “CQ“—a general call to all stations stemming from the French word sécurité—with “D” for “distress.” What was its most famous use? More… Discuss
