Sirius
Sirius
Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky. Located in the constellation Canis Major, it is one of the stars nearest to Earth. Because Sirius appears to follow at the heels of Orion the hunter, it is often called the “Dog Star.” Many cultures have attached special significance to Sirius. Ancient Egyptians equated it with the goddess Sopdet, while the ancient Romans associated its rising at dawn with the hottest part of the year—the “dog days.” What controversies has Sirius inspired? Today’s Birthday: Sigmund Freud (1856)

Sigmund Freud (1856)Freud was an Austrian psychiatrist who pioneered the study of the unconscious mind and founded the method of psychological therapy known as psychoanalysis. He postulated that there are a number of defense mechanisms that protect the conscious mind from threatening feelings, and he made conscious recognition of these forgotten experiences—through hypnosis and, later, free association—the foundation of psychoanalytic therapy. Freud was an outspoken proponent and early user of what narcotic? More… Discuss |

ARTICLE: LENT
LENT
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Its institutional purpose is heightened in the annual commemoration of Holy Week, marking the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the tradition and events of the New Testament beginning on Friday of Sorrows, further climaxing on Jesus’crucifixion on Good Friday, which ultimately culminates in the joyful celebration on Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. During Lent, many of the faithful commit to fasting or giving up certain types of luxuries as a form of penitence. Many Christians also add a Lenten spiritual discipline, such as reading a daily devotional, to draw themselves near to God.[6] TheStations of the Cross, a devotional commemoration of Christ’s carrying the Cross and of his execution, are often observed. Many Roman Catholic and some Protestant churches remove flowers from their altars, while crucifixes, religious statues, and other elaborate religious symbols are often veiled in violet fabrics in solemn observance of the event. Throughout Christendom, some adherents mark the season with the traditional abstention from the consumption of meat, most notably among Roman Catholics.[7]
Lent is traditionally described as lasting for forty days, in commemoration of the forty days which, according to the Gospels ofMatthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus spent fasting in the desert before the beginning of his public ministry, where he endured temptation by the Devil.[8][9] However, different Christian denominations calculate the forty days of Lent differently. Historically, the season of Lent lasts from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday and includes the Paschal Triduum.[10][11] This duration has been maintained by most Western Christian denominations, including the Anglican Church,[12] Lutheran Church,[13] Methodist Church,[14] and Western Rite Orthodox Church.[15] However, after the liturgical abbreviations of the Second Vatican Council in the Roman Catholic Church, Lent, in that denomination alone, is now taken to end on Maundy Thursday rather than Easter Eve, and hence lasts 38 days excluding Sundays, or 44 days in total.[10]

Noam Chomsky (2014) “How to Ruin an Economy; Some Simple Ways”
Filmed and edited by Leigha Cohenhttp://www.leighacohenvideo.com/
Noam Chomsky spoke at Third Boston Symposium on Economics on February 10th 2014, sponsored by the Northeastern University Economics Society in Boston, MA.
Chomsky argued that certain factors, among them cutting federal funding for research and development and the growing gap between the richest 1 percent and everybody else, have led to the country’s current economic climate.
“The system is so dysfunctional that it cannot put eager hands to needed work using the resources that would be available if the economy were designed for human needs,” Chomsky said. “These things didn’t just happen like a tornado, they are the results of deliberate policies over roughly the past generation.”
Chomsky focuses on what economic actions that government, the super rich and corporations are doing that insures the US and other economies fail for the overwhelming majority of people. We’re a nation whose leaders are pursuing policies that amount to economic suicide.
This video also includes an extended 14 minute question and answer period with Dr. Chomsky..

The Glauberg is one of a network of fortified sites found in parts of Germany. In 1988, a historian flying overhead discovered tumuli—mounds of earth protecting tombs—that were revealed to contain warriors’ remains and weapons. BEING (Why is there something instead of nothing?)
Being
Why is there something instead of nothing? This is one of the chief questions that, for millennia, has fueled the existential musings of philosophers who have pondered the concept of “being.” Used interchangeably with the word “existence,” the term “being” conceptualizes subjective and objective aspects of reality. One’s state of being is also a focus of psychology. According to psychiatrist Carl Jung, “the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light of meaning in the darkness of” what? More… Discuss

All we hope for, (poetic thought by George-B)
GOD’ biggest gift to us is Hope:
to keep our unreasonable dreams bathing in light…
to bridge over the hopeless depths of all sorts of crevices,
holes,
and cracks,
some more material than others…
Hope that there is life identical to ours-somewhere else
and that we’ll find and reach that place and then
that we will drain its entirety, its life, as we are doing, for whole history, to ours…
But, above all, the hope that it will be all forgiven and forgotten,
that HE will be back for us, to read to us
bed time stories and sing us to sleep by hermetic lullabies, because:
We are HIS children, and all we hope for is in the hopes.

Dream well (poetic thought by George-B)
They take your dream, undress it
and turn it into theirs
they take your dream, and dress it in
another one’s costume
They put your dream up at auction,
Hoping behind the scenes,
You’ll not suspect it,
they think it is well worth it
You know your dream was not for sale,
you never though of parting with
Just hoped well deep into your well
Its freshness be thirst quenching
Your thirst, never appeased
for just another dream come true,
Your prayer to the gods of dreams,
your wondrous masterpiece-
The dream long time in waiting .

Written in the 3rd-century by the Greek writer Athenaeus, the Deipnosophistae professes to be an account of three banquets held at the house of a scholar and wealthy patron of the arts.
