Distressing Report on Domestic Child Labor

Released on Wednesday to coincide with this year’s World Day Against Child Labor, a report on child laborfrom the UN’s International Labour Organization estimates that some 10.5 million children around the globe currently work as domestic laborers. More than half are believed to be between the ages of five and 14, and nearly three quarters are female. They are largely denied access to education and are often subject to abuse, but their plight, for the most part, remains hidden behind the closed doors of the private homes in which they work. More… Discuss


UK Physicians Commonly Prescribe Placebos

Placebos are apparently commonplace in the practice of medicine. A poll of general practitioners in the UK reveals that nearly all have, at one time or another, recommended a placebo pill or treatment to a patient, and three-quarters regularly do so. Though the practice can benefit some patients, as the simple expectation of improvement may be enough to make them feel better, not all placebos are inert. For example, many of those surveyed said they have prescribedantibiotics—which can cause a number of side effects—to patients with suspected viralinfections. Epinephrine Underused, Endangering Kids

It is not uncommon for young children with food allergies to be exposed to those foods at some point and suffer an allergic reaction as a result. In fact, a study of infants with known or suspected allergies to milk or egg found that nearly three-quarters had an allergic reaction during the study period. When this happens and a child experiences a severe reaction, caregivers must act quickly to administer a potentially life-saving dose of epinephrine. Yet, in about a third of the cases in this study, caregivers failed to do so, suggesting that more must be done to educate them about the use of epinephrine. More… Discuss
