A new UK law requiring Internet service providers (ISPs) and mobile companies to store user data reflects a growing and worrisome trend of mass surveillance by governments. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, whose off ice released a report concerning the issue, expressed concern that such government-approved programs are becoming “a dangerous habit rather than an exceptional measure” and that more needs to be done to ensure that people’s personal freedoms are protected. State of Israel Proclaimed (1948)

In November 1947, the UN approved the Partition Plan for Palestine. Britain had governed Palestine since 1920, but the Partition Plan called for the formation of two states—one Jewish and one Arab—as well as a small, internationally administered zone in formerly British territory. UN Court Orders Japan to Halt Antarctic Whaling

Despite signing a 1986 moratorium on whaling, Japan has continued to allow it, much to the consternation of conservation and animal rights groups as well as the international community. The country has justified its continued hunting of whales by claiming that it is being carried out for scientific purposes rather than for human consumption, a claim that has been met with widespread skepticism. On Monday, the UN’s International Court of Justice ordered Japan to put a stop to its Antarctic whaling program, ruling that the scientific output of the program did not justify the number of whales being killed.
