Nouvelle Cuisine

Nouvelle cuisine is a school of French cooking that seeks to bring out the natural flavors of foods and uses light, low-calorie sauces and stocks. Based on the style of chef Fernand Point, it was developed in France in the 1960s and marked a departure from the rich preparations of haute cuisine, which emphasizes butter and cream. Attentive Older Siblings

Studies show that children from larger families score more poorly on tests of IQvocabulary, and other academic indicators than kids from smaller families. Experts attribute this in part to reduced parental attention resulting from the need to divide time and attention among the children. This effect appears to be mitigated in families where older siblings are attuned to their younger siblings’ abilities and interact positively with them. Spare the Rod Lest You Spoil the Child

Evidence is mounting that parents should not put too much stock in the age-old adage “spare the rod and spoil the child.” In a recent study, researchers linkedspanking in early childhood to later behavior problems,aggressiveness, and even slight vocabulary deficits. Experts suspect that children who are spanked are more inclined to use their fists rather than their words to solve problems because this is the sort of behavior that has been modeled for them. It is less evident why spanking might hinder vocabulary development, but one possibility is that parents who spank may speak to their children less often than parents who use other forms of discipline. More… Discuss
