Health-Diets: DASH Diet Rated Best Overall

DASH Diet Rated Best Overall

For the fifth year in a row, US News & World Report has named the DASH diet the best overall diet. DASH—which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension—is a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products; low in saturated and total fat; low in cholesterol; and high in fiber. DASH was rated by a panel of experts above 34 other diets, including such popular options as Weight Watchers, the Mediterranean diet, and the Paleo diet. More… Discuss

this pressed: Mindfulness-based weight loss programs questioned – CBS News

Weight loss programs that stress mindfulnessself-awareness achieved by meditation and self-acceptance, paying attention to a body’s hunger cues and learning to enjoy food at a slower pace — are enjoying a surge in popularity.

But the latest research suggests this diet trend doesn’t necessarily work. Or, at least, there isn’t enough evidence to prove such techniques are effective, according to a retrospective analysis of 19 previous studies on mindfulness-based weight loss programs that was published Thursday in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine.

“There are many reasons to think mindfulness would be relevant for weight loss because people may have a range of behavioral and psychological responses to eating that mindfulness can address, including helping them slow down and focus on enjoying a meal,” Charles Emery, professor of psychology at Ohio State and senior author of the study, said in a press statement.”But our review of the research shows we still have a long way to go to provide convincing evidence of the benefits of mindfulness for weight loss and, especially, how it may work.”

Guess what: Caffeinated Clothing Can’t Cut Waistlines (as claimed by deceptive advertising)

Caffeinated Clothing Can’t Cut Waistlines

When it comes to losing weight, there are few shortcuts around eating right and getting regular exercise, but the marketplace is still saturated with quick-fix weight-loss products purporting to magically melt away the pounds. In the US, consumers have spent millions of dollars on caffeine-infused bras, girdles, leggings, and other articles of clothing that manufacturers claimed would break down fat, resulting in weight loss and reduced cellulite. However, there is no scientific evidence to back up these claims, and companies selling these products, under fire from US regulators, have agreed to refund customers who fell for the deceptive advertising. health: Fat Shaming Counterproductive

Fat Shaming Counterproductive

Shaming people for being overweight does not motivate them to lose weight. In fact, it appears to have the opposite effect. Adults who experienced weight discrimination gained more weight over a four-year period than those who did not. Being made to feel bad about one’s physique seems to drive people to take comfort in food while simultaneously undermining their self-confidence with respect to physical activity, leading them to avoid it. Unfortunately, weight bias is pervasive not just among the general public but also within the medical community, making it harder for those struggling with their weight to get much-needed support and encouragement. The Best Diet Is the One You Can Stick With

The Best Diet Is the One You Can Stick With

Diet fads seem to come and go with the seasons, so how can you know which one is best? Researchers have analyzed data from 48 separate trials to find the answer, and the results may surprise you: there is no “best.” All diets result in roughly similar weight loss, likely because they all cut calories to a similar level. More important than diet type, researchers say, is the individual dieter’s ability to stick with a given program. It is important to note, however, that this study looked exclusively at weight loss and not at other health issues, like cholesterol levels, that can be influenced by diet. More… Discuss

NEWS: TURN DOWN THE THERMOSTAT TO TRIM THE WAISTLINE (Or exercise, indoors, outdoors, to the same result!)

Turn Down the Thermostat to Trim the Waistline

A number of factors have been blamed for the obesity crisis gripping much of the industrialized world, and now researchers are adding indoor heating to the list. They say that heated buildings eliminate the need for the body to expend energy in order to keep warm, thereby reducing daily caloric burn. Other experts disagree, saying that cooler temperatures increase appetite, counteracting any caloric burn with an increased caloric intake. There is also some indication that cold indoor temperatures increase the risk of a stroke. More… Discuss

NEWS: FAD DIETS CAN WORK

Fad Diets Can Work

If you want to lose weight in 2014, you are going to have to work for it. Regardless of which diet one follows, and there are countless to choose from, the key is sticking to it. Researchers say even “fad” diets like the Paleo diet, a nutritional plan based on the presumed diet of thehunter-gatherer of long ago, and the 5:2 diet, which restricts followers to as little as 400 calories on two “fasting” days each week, can lead to weight loss, so long as the dieter does not stray from the plan. More…Discuss

What form of exercise do you enjoy the most?

Let’s say one day you wake up with a taste for ice cream: What flavor would you pick? But this post is about exercise not ice cream: what is your prefered exercise? calisthenics, jogging, brisk walking?

I enjoy a variety of exercises and I do them daily now:

  • 28 flights of stairs (ascending only, to protect my knees): I do this in 8 minutes, wearing my 2.5 lb ankle weights (which by the way  I wear all the day long). This get my metabolism going, for about 2 hours.
  • One hour brisk walking, and jogging for 5-6 miles in the evening (a great way to keep my body in shape, maintain and increase endurance and oxygenation (each other day I wear my 30 lb gym weights vest, and the 2.5lb ankle weights, for strength and stamina (I keep a 4-4.5 miles per hour cadence)
  • Two-three days (weekends) are reserved for the daily six miles, and a 20 miles cycling on my heavy bicycle (40 lb) in addition to 1-1.5 hours of brisk walking and jogging. I miss the stairs over the weekend though.
  • Before and after exercising I warm up to allow my body to stretch for 5 minutes.
You too can start exercising. Nothing big, it is all a one step at a time, and the first step is the most important and for most of us the hardest to make.
  • Good luck: Get outside, walk a little, the time to start is now!

Happy Anniversery To Me: One year of Yerba Mate Tea Drinking Experience

It is one year  since I was introduced to yerba mate, by a person which I will always remember. My first cup was a Taraguii, tea bag, just like the one in the picture above. I am enjoying yerba more and more, as I continue to discover more and more of its therapeutic effects, some of which make my doctor ask me what my secret was. So I told him it was ‘yerba mate”. Just like almost everybody I talked to, he asked me: “Yerba what?”.
He did not hear about yerba, but was eager to find out more. Some of the things the good doctor was impressed were: Much lower cholesterol,  lower glucose blood level, and weight loss.

So how does yerba carry out this?Well,  both by increasing the production of bile to help the  digestive process and better elimination of toxins through sudorific (perspiration) glands and diuresis (improved  kidneys function.)
The weight loss is due to daily physical activity and the regulation of the food intake, through drinking yerba mate tea.
One last great health benefit I noticed is a more restful nocturnal sleep: I know that because I dream, and remember the dreams upon waking, which I was not very good at before.
Therefore I will continue to have few cups daily, and talk about it, and introduce it to whoever has a listening ear and  guess what: I’m doing it right now.

Feel free to comment about your personal experiences with yerba, or if you want to find out more about it (Such a good thing is better served by more people and I have been educated into spreading a good thing when I discover one).
I also enjoy seeing people happy they have started their yerba experience, and no amount of money can buy that:

So share and share alike!

Outta Gym Free Card: Exercise doesn’t care about Gyms, and your pocket will love you

Actually the only place you will gain any weight at all, by following some (not even all) of the recommendations from this great WebMD presentation, will be in your pocket , as money saved: No need for excuses about membership expenses, or waste of time in traffic to get to the gym in the first place. Statistics cannot be wrong in this case: Exercise half an hour a day (the earlier, the better), and all the time you’ll “waste” daily will be returned to you ten fold closer to the end of the road in addition of  making the last years of your life easier. I know, I’m a terrible salesperson: But who can deny oneself a happier life…It’s a win-win situation.

Now go check that presentation,  http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/slideshow-no-gym-workout?ecd=soc_tw, and consider also small little changes in your life.

To Your Health, Drink Green and Yerba Maté Tea: Your Body Will Thank You For It

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

This Blog does not endorse, at this time any alternative medical treatment and  is based only on its author’s observations made as a result of consuming both green tea and yerba maté tea, following the popular search engines and articles available in the internet. These observations were confirmed by personal health care professionals. I hope you will check with your doctor too, and that consuming tea, will prove a beneficial to your general health

George.

Yes folks: You heard me blog about yerba maté, and green tea.
Why would I do that ?
I don’t sell it, I only try to bring the good news to  people, like back home, about it because of its therapeutic properties, when prepared right, and it is the most effective diuretic year around, while sugar-free, which is a great benefit for reducing the blood glycemic index and cholesterol level. So let’s say one suffers from diabetes, type II (adult Onset), and with all the medication administered the blood glucose levels are high. Yerba maté cleanses the blood (the lymphatic system, helping the kidneys to eliminate toxins, including extra amounts of glucose.) In few days you will experience a more restful sleep, a better blood circulation to the extremities, and a lighter body, just from the diuretic effect. At the same time, the tea has minerals and antioxidants so it is a good nutrient, both sugar and fat-free.

The big secret about preparing the infusion is this: Unlike black tea , for yerba maté tea, allow the water to cool 2-3 minutes before making the  tea.

Since I drink several cups of tea daily, I prefer ( so I learned from the videos on You-Tube) to make it in my 12 cups coffeemaker. Not only that, but i mix it with green tea Both loose, and benefit from the compounded health effects. The temperature of the coffeemaker is just right (180 – 185 °F), to avoid bitter taste and destruction of the antioxidants present in both green tea and yerba maté.

Just like with green tea there are several companies from South America commercializing Yerba Mate, I like Tarragui sin palo, because of the fresh aroma as the leaves are dried naturally and because it was the first brand I tried  about a year ago.
Have a cup of yerba maté tea, today.
