Liberia National Unification Day This annual observance in Liberia draws attention to the animosity between the Americo-Liberian elite and the indigenous majority. Under the leadership of President William V. S. Tubman, who led from 1944 to 1971, the divide between these two groups was diminished. Tubman introduced the National Unification Policy, which featured among other things an extension of the vote to women and the country’s indigenous people. A surgeon who contracted the Ebola virus while working in Sierra Leone died at a Nebraska hospital where he was transported for treatment, the facility said Monday.

A statement released Monday by Nebraska Medical Center said Dr. Martin Salia “has passed away as a result of the advanced symptoms of the disease.”

“Dr. Salia was extremely critical when he arrived here, and unfortunately, despite out best efforts, we weren’t able to save him,” said Dr. Phil Smith, medical director of the biocontainment unit.

Salia, 44, was being treated in the medical center’s biocontainment unit. He arrived Saturday by plane from West Africa, and was transported by ambulance for treatment at the hospital, where two other Ebola patients have been successfully treated. Officials said Salia might be more ill than the first Ebola patients treated successfully in the United States. On Sunday officials had described his condition as “an hour-by-hour situation.”

But American troops quarantined in Italy have good morale and are proud of their work against the “silent enemy” of Ebola, according to Major General Darryl Williams, who is being isolated alongside his men at the Army base in Vicenza.

When Dr. Craig Spencer went to volunteer in West Africa with the humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders, it took him far away from his home, family, friends and other people he loves, including his fiancé Morgan Dixon. Once he returned, Doctors Without Borders advised that he should monitor his health for signs of illness like running a fever, but that “as long as a returned staff member does not experience any symptoms, normal life can proceed.”

“Normal life” may presumably include sexual activity — but could that put a person’s partner at risk?

Aides to President Obama are criticizing decisions by three states to quarantine people who are returning from Ebola-stricken West Africa.

Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and United Nations ambassador Samantha Power said quarantines may discourage health workers from traveling to West Africa to help block the disease at its source.

“If you put everyone in one basket, even people who are clearly no threat, then we have the problem of the disincentive of people that we need,” Fauci said on ABC’s This Week. “Let’s not forget the best way to stop this epidemic and protect America is to stop it in Africa, and you can really help stopping it in Africa if we have our people, our heroes, the health care workers, go there and help us to protect America.”

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama on Saturday urged Americans to avoid hysteria over Ebola, and played down the idea of travel bans from Ebola-ravaged countries in West Africa, explaining that restrictions could make things worse. Lawmakers this week urged Obama to bar people from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea from entering the United States. Obama has said he is not philosophically opposed to travel bans, but in his weekly address made it clear that he is not leaning toward them.

“We can’t just cut ourselves off from West Africa,” Obama said, explaining it would make it harder to move health workers and supplies into the region, and would motivate people trying to get out the region to evade screening, making it harder to track cases. “Trying to seal off an entire region of the world – if that were even possible – could actually make the situation worse,” he said.

EBOLA IN AMERICA – Why Is There NO FLIGHT BAN from WEST AFRICA to U.S. ?

Despite telling hospital workers in Dallas he was in West Africa where the Ebola virus is spreading, the man who brought the disease to the United States was sent home after his first visit with doctors.

The decision by Texas Health Presbyterian has exposed an undetermined number of people to the deadly and usually fatal disease.

After the man returned and his diagnose was confirmed, officialdom began tracking anybody who had contact with him. It was initially determined a group of between a dozen and 18 people, ambulance workers and a number of school children, had contact with the patient. The Department of Health has confirmed a patient is currently in isolation and undergoing testing in Honolulu.

The Hawaii Nurses Association said the person is being treated at The Queen’s Medical Center.

Officials told KHON2 Ebola is a possibility, however the patient has yet to be specifically tested for the virus.

“We are early in the investigation of a patient — very, very early — who we’re investigating that might have Ebola,” said Dr. Melissa Viray, deputy state epidemiologist. “It’s very possible that they do and they have Ebola. I think it’s also more likely that they have another condition that presents with similar symptoms.”

Liberia, has prompted national concern over the potential for a wider spread of the deadly virus from West Africa, where at least 3,338 people have died in the worst outbreak on record. A public tweet from a large government supplier of emergency response products specializing in “high risk events” says that Disaster Assistance Response Teams were told to prepare to be activated in the month of October. Confirmation that the first case of Ebola has arrived in the United States will prompt questions as to whether the CDC will enact emergency procedures that could see even healthy Americans detained against their will. I can understand the need to keep the public calm, but why don’t these officials just tell us the truth? Like I have said so many times before, let us hope for the best, but let us also prepare for the worst.

It is the first case of Ebola diagnosed in the United States. That’s an important distinction because — unlike the medical workers who contracted Ebola in Africa and were flown back to the United States for treatment — the new Ebola patient could’ve been circulating in the general U.S. population, potentially spreading the disease.

The U.S. patient diagnosed with Ebola is a man who was traveling in Liberia, and he started showing Ebola symptoms four days after returning. In a briefing on Tuesday, CDC officials stressed that because the man was not symptomatic with Ebola while flying, there was “zero risk” of transmission for other passengers on the plane. They also vowed that public health officials “would stop [Ebola] in its tracks in the U.S.”

More than 3,000 people have died, and CDC estimated that as many as 1.4 million people in Liberia and Sierra Leone could contract Ebola by January 20. That’s about one in seven members of the population.

The longer the Ebola outbreak goes on, the greater the chance that the disease could mutate, too. Scott Gottlieb, who served as a top FDA official under President George W. Bush, has warned that there’s even a chance that Ebola could go airborne, Emory Healthcare in Atlanta has already treated three victims of the current Ebola outbreak. Last month, the World Health Organization estimated that 20,000 people could contract Ebola by mid-2015, but revised projections now indicate that this number could be reached as early as November. By January, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of infected could rise as high as 1.4 million. WHO Mulling Experimental Ebola Treatments

With the death toll from the Ebola outbreak in West Africa still rapidly rising, the World Health Organization (WHO) is exploring the ethical implications of using an experimental drug to combat the virus. Currently, there are no approved vaccines or medications for Ebola, but a number are under development. One experimental drug has already been used to treat two US aid workers infected in the outbreak, and some of the world’s leading Ebola experts are calling for experimental treatments to be made more widely available given the current crisis. Ebola Crisis Deepens

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa has claimed 729 lives in four countries thus far, making it the deadliest and widest ranging such outbreak the world has ever seen. Dozens of healthcare workers have fallen victim, complicating efforts to combat it. Though the disease is outpacing current efforts to contain its spread, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) still believes that the “unprecedented” outbreak could be stopped if proper steps are taken at both the national and international levels. “Drastic Action” Needed to Contain Ebola Outbreak in West Africa

The World Health Organization is calling for “drastic action” to contain the outbreak of Ebola currently raging in West Africa. Since the outbreak began four months ago, it has spread from Guinea to nearby Sierra Leone and Liberia, infected more than 600 people, and claimed nearly 400 lives, making it the largest Ebola outbreak in terms of cases, deaths, and geographical spread. Despite the presence of 150 experts, the number of reported cases and deaths is still rising daily, threatening the entire region and beyond. The charity Médecins Sans Frontières, or Doctors Without Borders, says the outbreak is out of control. More… Discuss
