Sigmund Freud (1856)

Freud was an Austrian psychiatrist who pioneered the study of the unconscious mind and founded the method of psychological therapy known as psychoanalysis. He postulated that there are a number of defense mechanisms that protect the conscious mind from threatening feelings, and he made conscious recognition of these forgotten experiences—through hypnosis and, later, free association—the foundation of psychoanalytic therapy. The Shadow

According to the founder of analytical psychology, Carl Jung, the shadow is the part of the unconscious mind that consists of forbidden feelings, primitive instincts, and repressed desires. Supposedly, a person can interact with his or her own shadow in a variety of ways—including falling victim to it—and the shadow can appear to a person as a figure in his or her dreams.
