Victims of asbestos poisoning are well accustomed to the gruelling twists and turns of Italy’s judicial process. But even the most battle-hardened were ill-prepared for the latest, bitter turn in a landmark case that has dragged on for decades.

Late on Wednesday, Italy’s top court overturned an 18-year prison sentence for Swiss billionaire Stephan Schmidheiny, the former owner of construction giant Eternit.

Schmidheiny, 67, was found guilty in 2012 of causing 3,000 deaths linked to the use of asbestos in his factories – in the biggest ever trial on asbestos-related deaths.

He was jailed in absentia and ordered to pay tens of millions of euros in compensation to local authorities and families of the victims, who included factory workers and residents who lived near Eternit factories in northern, central and southern Italy.

Though it primarily feeds on bamboo, the bear-like mammal’s digestive system is similar to that of a carnivore, and it must therefore spend as much as 16 hours a day eating up to 40 lb (18 kg) of bamboo leaves, stems, and shoots in order to get enough nutrients. In this short scene from our feature documentary, LIBBY, MONTANA, three former WR Grace employees talk about what it was like to work for the company in Libby. Les Skramstad worked in the mill only two years, but died of mesothelioma in 2007. Bob Wilkins was the local union rep for mine workers. He died of asbestos related disease in 2002. Dru Carr and I shot the interviews with Les and Bob in 2000. Earl Lovick was the plant manager for many years. His commentary here is from a videotaped deposition recorded during a civil case against WR Grace in the 1990s. Lovick died in 1996. What you can’t see can be deadly: virtually invisible, yet absolutely lethal asbestos fibers lead to environmental and occupational diseases that claim the lives of 30 Americans every day.

The time is now for the Senate to draft and pass meaningful legislation to overhaul the outdated and ineffective Toxic Substances Control Act  of 1976 and protect children from asbestos and dangerous toxic chemicals such as bisphenol A, an endocrine-disrupting chemical in some plastics and food can linings, and flame retardants infused into car seats, nap pads and other kid goods.

The original version of the Kent Micronite cigarette filter used crocidolite, a form of asbestos, from 1952 until at least mid-1956. Kent’s manufacturer, P. Lorillard Company, boasted that the filter was made of the same “pure,” “safe,” “dust-free” substance used to clean air in atomic energy plants and hospital operating rooms, and offered smokers “the greatest health protection ever” in a cigarette. The new brand was introduced with great fanfare in 1952. “The filtering material — a top wartime secret — represented the greatest scientific advance ever made in cleansing air of impurities,” stated one of the advertisements, prepared by Young & Rubicam. The trade magazine Advertising Age awarded Lorillard its “hard sell” award for the campaign. Other advertisements, including a series placed in the Journal of the American Medical Association and the New England Journal of Medicine, stressed the “health protection” Kents gave. Lorillard set up Kent displays at medical conventions and sent cartons of Kents to thousands of doctors and dentists. Some ads suggested that the A.M.A. had endorsed the Micronite filter, a claim the medical group promptly labeled “a most reprehensible instance of hucksterism.” Dr. Harold Knudson was the former vice president and research director of Hollingsworth & Vose. He designed the Micronite filter for Kent cigarettes. Mesothelioma, an exceedingly rare and lethal form of cancer, was once thought to be caused only by inhaling asbestos fibers.

Then in the late 1970s, when astonishing rates of the disease were reported among villagers in central Turkey, it turned out that a different fibrous mineral was the culprit. Erionite was abundant in native soil and stone, and so easy to work with that villagers had used it to build homes.

In the most devastated communities, known locally as “cancer villages,” mesothelioma rates were off the charts — responsible for 40 percent to 50 percent of all deaths. Animal studies showed erionite to be 100 to 800 times more carcinogenic than asbestos and, according to a scientific paper, “almost certainly the most toxic naturally occurring fibrous mineral known.”

The He Shi Bi is a piece of jade that features prominently in Chinese history. According to legend, a man named Bian He found a large stone that he believed contained jade in the hills of Chu. He presented it to the king and later to his successor, but they disbelieved the man’s claims and had his legs cut off as punishment. Jade is an ornamental stone. The term jade is applied to two different metamorphic rocks that are made up of different silicate minerals:

• Nephrite consists of a microcrystaline interlocking fibrous matrix of the calcium, magnesium-iron rich amphibole mineral series tremolite (calcium-magnesium)-ferroactinolite (calcium-magnesium-iron). The middle member of this series with an intermediate composition is called actinolite (the silky fibrous mineral form is one form of asbestos). The higher the iron content the greener the colour.

LIBBY, Mont. — For a decade, the people of Libby have longed for the day when they will be rid of the asbestos that turned their town into the deadliest Superfund site in America.

Now they are being forced to live through the agony all over again, thanks to two giant piles of bark and wood chips on the edge of town.

An Associated Press investigation found that the federal government has known for at least three years that the wood piles were contaminated with an unknown level of asbestos, even as Libby residents hauled truckload after truckload of the material away from the site and placed it in yards, in city parks, outside schools and at the local cemetery. The Environmental Protection Agency did not stop the removal of the material until the AP began investigating in early March.

Regulators still do not know what effect the material could have on public health, but EPA documents obtained by the AP showed that the agency found potentially deadly asbestos fibers in four of 20 samples taken from the piles of scrap wood in 2007. The sprawling piles came from a now-defunct timber mill that took thousands of trees from a forest tainted with asbestos from a nearby mine.

Montana: Regulators Knew Contaminated Bark Was Being Sold in Asbestos-Tainted Town

 

In Montana, the Associated Press has revealed federal regulators knew potentially contaminated bark and wood chips were being sold from a Superfund site in the asbestos-tainted town of Libby, Montana, for three years before they stopped the practice. The contaminated wood chips were placed in yards, city parks, outside schools and at the local cemetery. Asbestos from a W.R. Grace mine in Libby has killed an estimated 400 people and sickened at least 1,750 people.
