George Balanchine

Balanchine was one of the 20th century’s foremost choreographers. His stark ballets emphasized “pure” dance and formed a bridge between classical and modern ballet. Born in Russia, he moved to the US in 1933 and became director of ballet for the Metropolitan Opera House and co-founder of the School of American Ballet.
