The French composer Hector Berlioz wrote a number of overtures, many of which have become popular concert items. They include overtures intended to introduce operas as well as independent concert overtures.

Les francs-juges

Les francs-juges, Op. 3. Composed 1826. The overture to Berlioz’s first, unperformed opera. It was first performed in the concert hall of the Paris Conservatoire as part of an all Berlioz concert on 26 May 1828. In his study on the composer, Jacques Barzun describes the work as “a genuine tour de force for a young dramatic musician working without knowledge of Beethoven”

Waverley

Waverley: grande ouverture (Waverley: Grand Overture), Op. 1. A concert overture composed in 1828. It was first performed at the Paris Conservatoire on 26 May 1828. Berlioz took his inspiration from Sir Walter Scott‘s Waverley novels.

Le roi Lear

Le roi Lear (King Lear), Op. 4. Composed in Nice in 1831 during Berlioz’s journey back to France after his stay in Italy (due to winning the Prix de Rome). The overture is based on Shakespeare‘s King Lear, a recent discovery for the composer whose love of the dramatist is evident in many other of his works. It was first performed at the Paris Conservatoire on 22 December 1833.

Rob Roy

Intrata di Rob Roy Macgregor (Rob Roy Overture). Composed in 1831 and first performed at the Paris Conservatoire on 14 April 1833. The overture was inspired by Sir Walter Scott’s novel Rob Roy. Berlioz was never happy with the piece, regarding it as “long and diffuse”, and withdrew it after the premiere.

Benvenuto Cellini

Overture to the opera of the same name, composed in 1838.

Le carnaval romain

Le carnaval romain, ouverture pour orchestre (Roman Carnival Overture), Op. 9. Composed in 1844 and first performed at the Salle Herz, Paris, on 3 February 1844. A stand-alone overture intended for concert performance, made up of material and themes from Berlioz’s opera Benvenuto Cellini, including some music from the opera’s carnival scene – hence the overture’s title. It is scored for large orchestra, is in the key of A major, and features a prominent and famous solo for the cor anglais.

Le corsaire

Le corsaire (The Corsair). Composed while Berlioz was on holiday in Nice in August 1844. It was first performed under the title La tour de Nice (The Tower of Nice) on 19 January 1845. It was then renamed Le corsaire rouge (after James Fenimore Cooper‘s novel The Red Rover) and finally Le corsaire (suggesting Byron‘s poem The Corsair).

La fuite en Egypte

Overture to La fuite en Egypte (The Flight into Egypt). With two other pieces, L’adieu des bergers and Le repos de la sainte famille, this made up La fuite en Egypte, a short work depicting Jesus and his family fleeing to Egypt to escape the persecution of King Herod, which was first published in 1852. This became the core of the oratorio L’enfance du Christ.

Béatrice et Bénédict

Les Troyens à Carthage: Prologue

Les Troyens à Carthage: Prologue (The Trojans at Carthage: Prologue) Berlioz’s epic opera Les Troyens was never performed complete during his lifetime. In an attempt to have the opera staged by the Théâtre Lyrique in 1863, he split it into two parts, with acts 1 and 2 becoming La prise de Troie (The Capture of Troy) and acts 3–5 Les Troyens à Carthage. Only the latter was accepted and Berlioz wrote an orchestral prologue to introduce this version evoking the tragic fate of Troy.

The Symphony No. 25 in G minor, K. 183/173dB, was written by the then 17 year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in October 1773,^[1] shortly after the success of his opera seria Lucio Silla. It was supposedly completed in Salzburg on October 5, a mere two days after the completion of his Symphony No. 24, although this remains unsubstantiated. Its first movement is widely known as the opening music in Miloš Forman‘s film Amadeus.

This is one of two symphonies Mozart composed in G minor, sometimes referred to as the “little G minor”. (The other is the Symphony No. 40; see also Mozart and G minor.)

Style and influence

With its wide-leap melodic lines and syncopation, this symphony is characteristic of the Sturm und Drang style. It shares certain features with other Sturm und Drang symphonies of this time, and is likely inspired by Joseph Haydn‘s Symphony No. 39 which is likewise in G minor.^[2]

Performance history

The work was first performed in the United States by the Boston Symphony Orchestra on October 27, 1899, under the direction of Wilhelm Gericke. It was not performed again in the U.S. until 1937, when rendered by the Alfred Wallenstein Sinfonietta. John Barbirolli and the New York Philharmonic performed it again in 1941 as part of their centennial season.^[3]

La Clemenza di Tito (The Clemency of Titus), K.621 is an opera seria composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with text after Metastasio. It was in fact, his very last opera, having been started after the bulk of Die Zauberflöte was already written (though Mozart did not complete Die Zauberflöte until his return to Vienna after the Prague premiere of Tito).
In July 1791, the last year of his life, Mozart was already well advanced
in writing The Magic Flute when he was asked to compose an opera seria.

The commission came from the impresario Domenico Guardasoni, who lived in Prague and who had been charged with providing a new work to mark the coronation of Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor as King of Bohemia. The Ceremony would take place on September 6; Guardasoni had been approached about the opera in June. There was not much room to manoeuvre.

At separate times, Felix Mendelssohn composed music for William Shakespeare‘s play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In 1826, near the start of his career, Mendelssohn wrote a concert overture (Op. 21). In 1842, only a few years before his death, he wrote incidental music (Op. 61) for a production of the play, into which he incorporated the existing Overture. The incidental music includes the world-famous Wedding March. The German title reads Ein Sommernachtstraum.

Overture

The Overture in E major, Op. 21, was written by Mendelssohn at 17 years and 6 months old (it was finished on 6 August 1826),^[1] and George Grove called it “the greatest marvel of early maturity that the world has ever seen in music”.^[2] It was written as a concert overture, not associated with any performance of the play. The Overture was written after Mendelssohn had read a German translation of the play in 1826. The translation was by August Wilhelm Schlegel, with help from Ludwig Tieck. There was a family connection as well: Schlegel’s brother Friedrich married Felix Mendelssohn’s aunt Dorothea.^[3]

While a romantic piece in atmosphere, the Overture incorporates many classical elements, being cast in sonata form and shaped by regular phrasings and harmonic transitions. The piece is also noted for its striking instrumental effects, such as the emulation of scampering ‘fairy feet’ at the beginning and the braying of Bottom as an ass (effects which were influenced by the aesthetic ideas and suggestions of Mendelssohn’s friend at the time, Adolf Bernhard Marx). Heinrich Eduard Jacob, in his biography of the composer, said that Mendelssohn had scribbled the chords after hearing an evening breeze rustle the leaves in the garden of the family’s home.^[3]

Following the first theme in the parallel relative minor (E minor) representing the dancing fairies, a transition (the royal music of the court of Athens) leads to a second theme, that of the lovers. A final group of themes, suggesting the craftsmen and hunting calls, closes the exposition. The fairies dominate most of the development section and ultimately have the final word in the coda, just as in Shakespeare’s play.

The Overture was premiered in Stettin (then in Prussia; now Szczecin, Poland) on 20 February 1827,^[4] at a concert conducted by Carl Loewe. Mendelssohn had turned 18 just over two weeks earlier. He had to travel 80 miles through a raging snowstorm to get to the concert,^[5] which was his first public appearance. Loewe and Mendelssohn also appeared as soloists in Mendelssohn’s Concerto in A-flat major for 2 pianos and orchestra, and Mendelssohn alone was the soloist for Carl Maria von Weber‘s Konzertstück in F minor. After the intermission, he joined the first violins for a performance of Beethoven‘s Ninth Symphony.

The first British performance of the Overture was conducted by Mendelssohn himself, on 24 June 1829, at the Argyll Rooms in London, at a concert in benefit of the victims of the floods in Silesia, and played by an orchestra that had been assembled byMendelssohn’s friend Sir George Smart.^[4]

A government print order for as many as 34 million blank work permits and green cards is raising concern that the Obama administration could be preparing an executive order for amnesty after the November election.

An online solicitation by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigrations Services seeks vendors that can produce a minimum 4 million cards per year for five years, and 9 million in the early stages.

If the numbers reported by Breitbart.com on Monday are correct, they are vastly larger than official estimates of 12 million illegal residents in this country.

There are various research methods for assigning a GI value to food. In general, the number is based on how much a food item raises blood glucose levels in healthy research participants compared with how much pure glucose raises their blood glucose. GI values are generally divided into three categories:
Low GI: 1 to 55
Medium GI: 56 to 69

For example, raw carrots have a GI value of 35. This means that if you eat enough carrots to consume 1.8 ounces (50 grams) of digestible carbohydrates (sugars and starches), your blood glucose level after eating the carrots will be 35 percent of the blood glucose level after eating 1.8 ounces (50 grams) of pure glucose.

The Flute Concerto No. 1 in G major (K. 313) was written in 1778 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Commissioned by the Dutch flautist Ferdinand De Jean in 1777, Mozart was supposed to provide four flute quartets and three flute concerti, yet he only completed two of the three concerti: K. 313 being the first.^[1] The Andante for Flute and Orchestra K. 315 may have been written as an alternative slow movement for this concerto.

This is the anniversary of the famous naval battle fought by the British off Cape Trafalgar, Spain, in 1805, under the command of Viscount Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). The victory over Napoleon’s forces cost Lord Nelson his life and is commemorated by the column erected in his honor in London’s Trafalgar Square. Ceremonies on Trafalgar Day, or Nelson Day, include a naval parade from London’s Mall to Trafalgar Square, where a brief service is held and wreaths are placed at the foot of Nelson’s Column.
