Burro Schmidt Tunnel – Death Valley Jim – Guide to the Mojave Desert, Death Valley, Joshua Tree

Burro Schmidt came to California in 1894 with the same hopes and dreams of other people making their way out west, to strike gold. He prospected for a couple of years around Kern County before staking a claim in the El Paso Mountains in 1906.

The problem that he faced was moving ore out of the mountains, to the nearest railroad. So, he did what any mentally stable person would do, he spent thirty-two years digging a one mile tunnel through twenty-five hundred feet of granite. Fourteen years after starting his tunnel a road was built up Last Chance Canyon, rendering his tunnel pointless. But that didn’t stop Schmidt, he had become obsessed with completing the tunnel.

Munții Făgăraşului. Lacul Călțun

Munții Făgărașului reprezintă un masiv muntos care face parte din Carpații Meridionali, și în care se află cel mai înalt vârf montan din România, vârful Moldoveanu 2.544 de metri.
   Transfăgărășanul este o cale rutieră de circulație din România, care începe în comuna Bascov, județul Argeș de lângă orașul Pitești, în direcția orașului Curtea de Argeș și se termină la intersecția cu drumul DN1 între Sibiu și Brașov, în apropierea comunei Cârțișoara, cu o lungime de 151 km, traversând pe axa nord-sud Munții Făgăraș. Porțiunea de la barajul Vidraru până la Cârțișoara traversează un teren montan la altitudini mari și a fost construită în perioada 1970–1974, pe o lungime de aproximativ 91 km.
