„Bătrânul Carpaţilor” are o vârstă de circa 900 de ani şi este martor al naşterii Transilvaniei.

Intotdeauna am simtit ca am o legatura speciala cu natura…o legatura aparte, dat fiind faptul ca mereu in natura am regasit energia de care am nevoie sa continui..bateriile mele se incarca de la soare, de la pamant, din iarba , din verdele copacilor… Am calatorit impreuna cu oamenii faini imbracati in portul din zona Rupea si Moeciu tocmai la stejarul de la Mercheasa, un stejar in varsta estimata de 900 de ani. Cu mana pe inima spun ca atunci cand am ajuns la trunchiul lui si i-am atins scoarta, m-am gandit la toti cei care timp de 900 de ani i-au mangaiat scoarta, i-au cautat umbra in zilele toride, au privit cerul dintre frunzele lui…am atins scoarta si am inchis ochii…oare cine a atins acest copac? Energiile lor sunt toate prinse in el si el a vazut asa de multe…a vazut oameni fericiti, oameni tristi, oameni dormind, oameni care munceau pe camp, oameni cu dragoste, oameni cu ura, oameni…si ramane la fel de tacut si de frumos, ca un batran intelept…vantul a batut printre frunzele lui si am avut impresia ca ne sopteste o poveste magica…dintre toate calatoriile mele, sincer spun ca aici m-as intoarce de mii si mii de ori…natura este de leaganul sufletului meu… Din pacate, cu tristete am remarcat ca nu exista absolut nici macar o placuta cu explicatii. Daca eram un turist strain, cred ca habar nu aveam la ce ma uit…intr-adevar e un gard in jurul lui, dar acest lucru nu reliefeaza cu absolut nimic explicatia necesara acestui monument al naturii. Imi doresc ca la viitoarea vizita sa fie mai mult investit in aceasta zona, cateva indicatoare, o placuta cu explicatii…Domnul ne-a dat , fratilor, dar nu ne baga si in traista! Despre acest stejar am aflat ca: “Ascuns după alţi stejari seculari, „Bătrânul Carpaţilor” are o vârstă de circa 900 de ani şi este martor al naşterii Transilvaniei. Odată ajunşi lângă stejarul bătrân, timpul stă în loc. Stejarul se găseşte mai sus de satul Mercheaşa, aparţinător de comuna Homorod, din judeţul Braşov, pe o păşune cu stejari seculari, la aproximativ 1,7 kilometri est – nord est de localitate. Specia stejatului este Quercus robur şi are o circumferinţă, măsurată la înălţimea de 1,3 metri de la pământ, de 9,3 metri; are o înălțime de 21,3 metri şi are o coroană aproape întreagă, frumos rotunjită. În plus, până la înălţimea de trei metri de la pământ, are cinci cioturi, urme ale unor ramuri rupte de-a lungul vieţii sale. Copacul este sănătos şi nu a fost afectat de insecte dăunătoare, iar în partea de jos are patru zone cu scoarţă arsă superficial, probabil urme ale focurilor făcute de ciobanii care au grijă de vitele satului. Procedura de declarare a „Bătrânului Carpaţilor” ca monument al naturii a fost declanşată de Asociaţia Geopark Perşani.
