Poorer People Pay Price for Smoking
One strategy that some governments have adopted to curb smoking is the imposition of high cigarette taxes, but for those smokers it does not deter, the resulting financial burden can be a heavy one. In the state of New York, which imposes a $4.35 tax on every pack ofcigarettes—the highest such tax in the US—low-income smokers spend nearly a quarter of their earnings on cigarettes. I never could be too sympathetic to those who smoke and then need a program to kick the habit. Maybe it is because even one cigarette always made me sick.
I do feel sorry for children/families who are doing without basics or are living in a smokey environment.
