Mozart: 12 Variations “Ah, vous dirai-je, maman” KV 265 (Clara Haskil)

Mozart painted by Greuze

Ah ! vous dirais-je, maman
Ce qui cause mon grand chagrin:
Papa veut que je raisonne
Mieux qu-une grande personne:
Moi je sais que les bonbons
Valent mieux que la raison.

Ah ! vous dirais-je, maman
Ce qui cause mon grand chagrin:
Papa veut que je retienne
Les verbes, La Laurentienne:
Moi je dis que les bonbons
Valent mieux que les leçons.

I think I was about 4 years years old when I learned this song. Then one day I listen to Mozart’s Variations on its theme, and I had been my companion ever since. THe richness of its simplicity, the beauty of the variations: Who else would’ve been best suitable to compose such a divine music, but Mozart ? This is one way to thank, my first French teacher, Miss. Banu, who was my mom teacher at Carmen Sylva College, in Bucharest. The educational foundation that she built survived many challenges, and allowed me to enjoy a culture, different than my own, and to appreciate it in the fullest. It also helped me learn english, and understand so much more of what it means to know in several languages, beside your mother’s tongue. I enjoy every opportunity to practice, to maintain the knowledge which, like a muscle not put to work, will weaken when unused enough.

And who else would’ve play it so truly but Clara Haskil ?
