Family members might have too much on their minds today and ask you for more help than you’re prepared to give. Make sure you stay calm and focused so you can decide which difficulties are most urgent and need to be handled first. Don’t be afraid to tell others your decision. When possible, give advice rather than help. Sometimes that’s all people really need.: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tfd.mobile.TfdSearch

Today’s Holiday: Sukkot

Today’s Holiday:
Sukkot

In the Biblical account of their escape from Egypt, the Jews, led by Moses, wandered in the desert for 40 years. For much of the time they lived in huts, or sukkot, made of wooden frames covered with branches or hay. The festival of Sukkot commemorates this period in Jewish history. The traditional way of observing Sukkot is to build a sukkah and live in it during the seven-day festival. A major part of the festival is the four species: a palm branch, citron, three myrtle twigs, and two willow branches. These are tied together and waved at different points in the service. This Day in History: Theodore Roosevelt Shot in the Chest While Campaigning (1912)

This Day in History:
Theodore Roosevelt Shot in the Chest While Campaigning (1912)

During a bid for the presidency in 1912, Roosevelt was shot by saloonkeeper John Schrank. The bullet lodged in his chest after penetrating a steel eyeglass case and a folded copy of the 50-page speech he was carrying in his jacket, but he refused to go to the hospital until after he had delivered his scheduled speech. Doctors deemed it too dangerous to remove the bullet, and it remained in Roosevelt’s chest for the rest of his life. What did Roosevelt say about the shooting during his speech? The Phonograph Cylinder

The first machine to reproduce recorded sound, the phonograph, was built by Thomas Edison in 1877. Edison’s “records,” as they were called, were first made of tin foil wrapped around cylinders. Since tin foil was not a practical recording medium for everyday use and commercial production, cylinders made of wax, and later plastic, were introduced and dominated the market until the advent of disc records in the early 20th century.
