Sergei Prokofiev began work on his Symphony No. 1 in D major (Op. 25) in 1916, but wrote most of it in 1917, finishing work on September 10.[1] It is written in loose imitation of the style of Haydn (and to a lesser extent, Mozart), and is widely known as the Classical Symphony, a name given to it by the composer. It premiered on April 21, 1918 in Petrograd, conducted by Prokofiev himself,[1] and has become one of his most popular and beloved works.

ODAY’S BIRTHDAY: SIR JOSEPH JOHN “J. J.” THOMSON (1856)
Sir Joseph John “J. J.” Thomson (1856)
One of the founders of modern physics, Thomson helped revolutionize the knowledge of atomic structure. He is known primarily for his discovery of the electron and his investigation of its charge and mass, his development of the mathematical theory of electricity and magnetism, and his role in the discovery of isotopes and invention of mass spectrometry. His research into the electrical conductivity of gases earned him a Nobel Prize in 1906. What did Thomson originally call electrons? More…Discuss

THIS DAY IN THE YESTERYEAR: DISCOVERY OF PILTDOWN MAN ANNOUNCED (1912)
Discovery of Piltdown Man Announced (1912)
In the early 20th-century, amateur archaeologist Charles Dawson announced that a fossilized skull belonging to a previously unknown species of prehistoric man had been found in Piltdown, England. It took 40 years to definitively determine that the skull was not that of a primitive hominid but rather a fake constructed from a human cranium and the jawbone of an ape. The perpetrator of the hoax has never been identified, though many have fallen under suspicion, including what famous author? More… Discuss
THE 1908 NEW YORK TO PARIS RACE
The 1908 New York to Paris Race
On February 12, 1908, six cars representing four nations—Germany, France, Italy, and the US—embarked on an automobile race from New York City to Paris. The challenge was daunting enough given the newness of the automobile and the unpaved nature—or nonexistence—of many roads, but the months-long journey also had to be re-routed at times due to impassable conditions. Only three cars managed to complete the race. The Germans reached Paris first, but the US team was declared the winner. Why? More…Discuss

MARIA TANASE – CANTEC DE NUNTA DIN FAGARAS (un cantec vechi cat lumea, si now de mii de ani)
Fagaras Country {NOW DISSOLVED AND SHARED BY BRASOV AND SIIBU] sTOOD FOR CENTURIES AS BORDER GUARD OF NORTHERN ROMANIA, AUTONOMOUS, AND DEFENDING. THE SONG ABOVE IS A OLDER THAN OLD TRADITIONAL WISDOM, MATURE ARCHETIPICAL TRUTH ABOUT FAMILIES AND INTERACTIVE RELATIONS THROUGH MARRIAGE, THROUGH THE EYE OF TH MOTHER OF THE BRIDE.
CANTEC DE NUNTA DIN FAGARAS (Cunoscut deasemenea sub numele de “Oratia Soarelui” : “Si se roaga Soarelui”)
Iese muma miresii,
In mijlocul curtii,
Si se roaga Soarelui:
Tine soare ziua mare
C-am o fata calatoare,
Peste munti, la alte curti,
La parinti necunoscuti,
La surori fara durori,
Si la frati ne-intrebati…
Ia-ti mireasa ziua buna
De la tata de la muma,
De la frati de la surori,
De la frati de la surori,
De la palanul cu flori
De la palanul cu flori,
De la fir de busuioc,
de la ficiorii din joc
De la ficiorii din joc,
Ca la muma-ta ai fost
un mar mare si frumos,
dar la soacra-ta vei fi
ca vatrariul dupa usa,
ca matura dupa usa,
ca vatrariul din cenusa…
Iese muma miresii,
In mijlocul curtii,
Si se roaga Soarelui…
Va rog frumos, daca stiti mai mult despre varsta, si originea acestui cantec minunat…

The ancestor, poetic thought by George-B
The ancestor, poetic thought by George-B
to tempt a butterfly
he lit
the most brilliant light in the sky.
To tempt a shark
he draw blood,
just at a tiny water drop weight.
To tempt Divinity
he drew,
ten sculpt
then he objected,
and denied,
and outlawed,
and find a lonely definition: Idolatry, he called it.
To tempt the storm
he built an ark, up on the highest mountain,
splurged its population,
and wasn’t swallowed but survived, and then,
he passed the genome, from one to all:
Every now and then we dream of him, the ancestor.

COPLAND SUITE APPALACHIAN SPRING (RAFFI ARMENIAN)
AARON COPLAND
SUITE APPALACHIAN SPRING
STRATTFORD ENSEMBLE
(ONTARIO,CANADA)
DIR-RAFFI ARMENIAN
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Appalachian Spring is a composition by Aaron Copland that premiered in 1944 and has achieved widespread and enduring popularity as an orchestral suite. The ballet, scored for a thirteen-member chamber orchestra, was created upon commission of choreographer and dancer Martha Graham with funds from the Coolidge Foundation; it premiered on Monday, October 30, 1944, at the Library of Congress in Washington DC, withMartha Graham (1894-1991) dancing the lead role. The set was designed by the Japanese American sculptor Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988). Copland was awarded the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Music for his achievement.[1][2]
O Appalachian Spring! I gained the ledge;
Steep, inaccessible smile that eastward bends
And northward reaches in that violet wedge
Of Adirondacks!
The orchestral suite is divided into eight sections. Copland describes each scene thus:
- Very slowly. Introduction of the characters, one by one, in a suffused light.
- Fast/Allegro. Sudden burst of unison strings in A major arpeggios starts the action. A sentiment both elated and religious gives the keynote to this scene.
- Moderate/Moderato. Duo for the Bride and her Intended – scene of tenderness and passion.
- Quite fast. The Revivalist and his flock. Folksy feeling – suggestions of square dances and country fiddlers.
- Still faster/Subito Allegro. Solo dance of the Bride – presentiment of motherhood. Extremes of joy and fear and wonder.
- Very slowly (as at first). Transition scene to music reminiscent of the introduction.
- Calm and flowing/Doppio Movimento. Scenes of daily activity for the Bride and her Farmer husband. There are five variations on a Shakertheme. The theme, sung by a solo clarinet, was taken from a collection of Shaker melodies compiled by Edward D. Andrews, and published under the title “The Gift to Be Simple.” The melody borrowed and used almost literally is called “Simple Gifts.”
- Moderate. Coda/Moderato – Coda. The Bride takes her place among her neighbors. At the end the couple are left “quiet and strong in their new house.” Muted strings intone a hushed prayerlike chorale passage. The close is reminiscent of the opening music.
FABULOUS COMPOSITIONS: Aaron Copland – Letter from Home [with dedication to all relatives of the euzicasa family]
‘Letter from Home’ was commissioned by Paul Whiteman and the American Broadcasting Company. The premiere was conducted by Whiteman on the Philco Radio Hour on October 17, 1944. It was revised in 1962 and this version represents a reduction of the original scoring. I have drawn extensively from the photos in our family albums to illustrate the piece, giving it a World War I setting.
