An unusual jellyfish seems to have made its stinging debut in the Southern California seas. The Orange County Register says some people suffered stings all over their bodies last week at Thousand Steps Beach in south Laguna Beach. Some Fourth of July swimmers came ashore with dark membranes clinging to their bodies, as the jellyfish broke up in the surf. SCORES of town halls in the metropolitan Athens-Piraeus area were being occupied by municipal workers on Wednesday morning following a decision by the POE-OTA federation of local government trade unions.

The action comes after two days of mass demonstrations of local government workers along with municipal police in Athens against the Greek government’s decision to sack at once 12,500 workers: the entire municipal police throughout Greece, all 2,500 school guards and thousands of teachers and civil servants on the diktats of the troika overlords EC-IMF–ECB.

Saudi Princess Charged With Human Trafficking in California

We have another Saudi royal on the criminal docket. The latest family member of the House of Saud was arrested in Santa Ana for human trafficking where a Kenyan woman gave a familiar account of domestic workers in Saudi Arabia. She said that her passport was taken and she was forced to work 16 hours a day, seven days a week for virtually no money. Meshael Alayban, 42, is one of the wives of Saudi Prince Abdulrahman bin Nasser bin Abdulaziz al Saud.

Shlomo Mintz was born in Moscow. In 1959, at the age of two, his family immigrated to Israel, where he studied with Ilona Feher, one of the last representatives of the Central European Violin School. The Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra in E-flat major, K. 364 (320d), was written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
At the time of its composition in 1779, Mozart was on a tour of Europe that included Mannheim and Paris. The composition’s complex orchestral dynamics reflects the increasing technical competence of the European orchestra of that era and was strongly influenced by Mozart’s visit to the Mannheim court orchestra during his European tour of 1777 to 1779. Mozart had been experimenting with the sinfonia concertante genre and this work can be considered his most successful realization in this cross-over genre between symphony and concerto. The piece is scored in three movements for solo violin, solo viola, two oboes, two horns, and strings, the latter including two sections of violas.
The solo viola part is written in D major instead of E flat major, and the instrument tuned a semitone sharper (scordatura technique), to give a more brilliant tone. This technique is uncommon when performed on the modern viola and is used mostly in performance on original instruments.
It has also been arranged for cello in place of the viola part.
