An Eastern box turtle retreats into its shell at Patuxent Research Refuge in Maryland (http://www.fws.gov/refuge/patuxent/). Refuge biologists recorded its weight, size and estimated age (30+ years) before releasing it. Box turtle numbers have fallen sharply in recent years. Box turtles can live to be 100 years old.
