Water Music

In 1712, George Frideric Handel took up permanent residence in England, leaving his employer—the elector of Hanover—behind in Germany. Two years later, the elector of Hanover became George I of England. When the king requested music for royal festivities, Handel wrote Water Music, allegedly to regain the king’s favor. Water Music debuted on a barge accompanying the king down the River Thames in 1717. What did George I think of Handel’s now-famous collection of songs? More… Discuss

Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, and hath redeemed us to God by His blood, to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. Blessing and honour, glory and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb, for ever and ever. Amen.

Fabulous Composers/Compositions: GEORG FRIEDRICH HÄNDEL- Berenice , Minuet

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
George Frideric Handel
George Frideric Handel by Balthasar Denner.jpg

Berenice (HWV 38) is an opera in three acts by George Frideric Handel to an Italian libretto, written in Italy in 1709 and originally entitled Berenice, regina d’Egitto (Berenice, Queen of Egypt), byAntonio Salvi.

It was first performed at the Covent Garden Theatre in London on 18 May 1737. It was not successful and only given four times.

It is based upon the life of Cleopatra Berenice, daughter of Ptolemy IX (the main character in Handel’s opera Tolomeo) and is set in around 81 BC.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY: CHRISTOPH GRAUPNER (1683)

Christoph Graupner (1683)

Graupner was a German harpsichordist and composer. After studying law at the University of Leipzig, he joined the Hamburg Opera alongside a young violinist named Handel, then became conductor to the court at Darmstadt. He won the prestigious cantorship at the Church of St. Thomas but was contractually bound to the court, so the cantorship went to another emerging composer—Johann Sebastian Bach. Graupner was a prolific writer and revered in his time. Why did he fall into obscurity? More…

See, the conqu’ring hero comes!

Image: Judas before the army of Nicanor, by Gustave Dore
Music: Judas Maccabaeus, by George Frideric Handel

Lyrics:

(First Messenger)
From Capharsalama on eagle wings I fly
with tidings of impetuous joy!
Came Lysias with his host, array’d
in coat of mail; their massy shields
of gold and brass flash’d lightning o’er the fields,
while the huge tow’r-back’d elephants display’d
a horrid front. But Judas undismay’d
met, fought and vanquish’d all the rageful train.
Yet more: Nicanor lies with thousands slain,
the blasphemous Nicanor who defy’d
the living God and, in his wanton pride,
a public monument ordain’d
of vict’ries yet ungain’d!

(Second Messenger)
But lo! the conqu’ror comes: and on his spear,
to dissipate all fear,
he bears the vaunter’s head and hand
that threaten’d desolation to the land!

(Youths)
See, the conqu’ring hero comes!
Sound the trumpets! Beat the drums!
Sports prepare! The laurel bring!
Songs of triumph to him sing!

(Virgins)
See the godlike youth advance!
Breathe the flutes and lead the dance!
Myrtle wreaths and roses twine
to deck the hero’s brow divine!

(Israelites)
See, the conqu’ring hero comes!
Sound the trumpets! Beat the drums!
Sports prepare! The laurel bring!
Songs of triumph to him sing!
See, the conqu’ring hero comes!
Sound the trumpets! Beat the drums!

This Day (April 12) In History: George Frideric Handel’s Oratorio Messiah Debuts (1742)

George Frideric Handel’s Oratorio Messiah Debuts (1742):

Composed by Handel, the great master of baroque music, Messiah is one of the most popular choral works in the Western world. Its immense popularity has resulted in the erroneous conception of Handel as primarily a church composer. In truth, the contemplative, English-language oratorio stands apart from the rest of his 32 oratorios, which are dramatically conceived. How did it become tradition for audiences to stand during the performance of Messiah’s “Hallelujah” chorus? Discuss
