Today’s Birthday: ALAIN-FOURNIER (1886)

Alain-Fournier (1886)

Henri-Alban Fournier, who published as Alain-Fournier, was a French novelist known for his single full-length work, Le Grand Meaulnes. The poetic novel about a youthful search for the ideal was published in 1913 and is now considered a classic of French literature. Set in an imaginary locale, it is a blend of the author’s own childhood and his mystical ideas. Though he began work on a second novel in 1914, he was killed in action in WWI that year. When was his body finally identified? More… Discuss

Regina Spektor – Ballad of a Politician/Lovable Dictator live at Other Music, NYC [02/09]

This post is dedicated to the most costly, and worthless fight for power over the war on American society, and to the next lovable dictator!: In short Elections 2012 _ “You can’t fool billion of people all the time!”

A man inside a room is shaking hands with other men
This is how it happens
Our carefully laid plans

Shake it, shake it baby
Shake your ass out in that street
You’re gonna make us scream someday
You’re gonna make it big

You love so deep, so tender
Your people and your land
You love ’em ’till they can’t recall
Who they are again

Work it, work it baby
Work your way ’round that room
You’re gonna make it big some day
You’re gonna make a boom

But I am
But I am
But I am not a number, not a name

But I am
But I am
But I am a carefully laid plan

Shake what your mama gave you
You know that it won’t last
You’re gonna taste the ground real soon
You’re gonna taste the grass

A man inside a room is shaking hands with other men
This is how it happens
Our world under command

Shake it, shake it baby
Shake your ass out in that street
You’re gonna make us scream someday
You’re gonna make us weak

You’re gonna make us scream someday
You’re gonna make it big

Johannes Brahms – Op.49 No.4 Wiegenlied / Lullaby

John Williams: Theme from ‘The Accidental Tourist’ (piano solo …

John WilliamsTheme from ‘The Accidental Tourist‘ (piano solo

John Williams (1932- ) – the composer not the guitarist – needs no introduction from me. This transcription of the main theme from William’s Oscar-nominated score for the 1988 William Hurt / Kathleen Turner/ Geena Davis movie appears in the ‘John Wiliams Antholocy compilation (ISBN 723188617746). The portion of the sountrack most frequently recorded is the closing credits music, and I have not actually heard the orchestral version of this particular extract. but the piece is very pianistic. The transcriber is not identified but may well the the same person who did the excellent transcription of the theme from ‘Presumed Innocent’ which appears in the same anthology and is prepared to a similarly high standard . Williams’ music seems to me a fascinating (and incredibly successful) blend of elements from Copland, Barber, Bernstein and Rachmaninov (and perhaps Prokofiev in pieces like the ‘Parade of the Ewoks‘). –

MARIA TANASE – CANTEC DE NUNTA DIN FAGARAS (un cantec vechi cat lumea, si now de mii de ani)

A Romanian folklore song as old as the world while thousand of years young

Iese muma miresii,
In mijlocul curtii,
Si se roaga Soarelui:

Tine soare ziua mare
C-am o fata calatoare,
Peste munti, la alte curti,
La parinti necunoscuti,
La surori fara durori,
Si la frati ne-intrebati…

Ia-ti mireasa ziua buna
De la tata de la muma,
De la frati de la surori,
De la frati de la surori,
De la palanul cu flori
De la palanul cu flori,

De la fir de busuioc,
de la ficiorii din joc

De la ficiorii din joc,

Ca la muma-ta ai fost
un mar mare si frumos,
dar la soacra-ta vei fi
ca vatrariul dupa usa,
ca matura dupa usa,
ca vatrariul din cenusa…

Iese muma miresii,
In mijlocul curtii,
Si se roaga Soarelui…

Bob Dylan’s I Shall Be Released (to all those who carry around a conscience, like a ball and chain, building the pass to TRUTH)

They say evrything can be replaced,
Yet evry distance is not near.
So I remember evry face
Of evry man who put me here.
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east.
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

They say evry man needs protection,
They say evry man must fall.
Yet I swear I see my reflection
Some place so high above this wall.
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east.
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

Standing next to me in this lonely crowd,
Is a man who swears he’s not to blame.
All day long I hear him shout so loud,
Crying out that he was framed.
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east.
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

James “Jimmy” Dorsey (1904)

Dorsey was a prominent jazz musician and big band leader. He began performing as a youth, first learning the trumpet before

taking up his signature instruments, the clarinet and alto saxophone. He formed several bands with his brother, and the duo became so popular that they later starred in a fictionalized film biography, The Fabulous Dorseys. After they parted ways in 1935, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra had several number-one hits. What was the name of his first post-split hit recordMore… Discuss
