Saint Catherine of Siena (1347)

Born in Siena, Italy, as Caterina Benincasa, Catherine claimed to have mystic visions beginning in early childhood. In 1370, in response to a vision, she began sending letters to prominent figures. She later traveled to Avignon and influenced Pope Gregory XI to end the “Babylonian captivity” of the papacy and return to Rome. Santa Catalina de Siena (1347-1380), virgen y doctora de la Iglesia, que habiendo entrado en las Hermanas de la Penitencia de Santo Domingo, deseosa de conocer a Dios en sí misma y a sí misma en Dios, se esforzó en asemejarse a Cristo crucificado y trabajó también enérgica e incansablemente por la paz, para que el Romano Pontífice regresara a la Urbe y por la unidad de la Iglesia, dejando espléndidos documentos llenos de doctrina espiritual (1380).
