When I talk of eyes, the stars come out! Whose eyes are they? If they are angels’ eyes, why do they look down here and see good men hurt, and only wink and sparkle all the night?

Ronald McNair (1950)

A nationally recognized US physicist, accomplished saxophonist, and black belt in karate, McNair was selected to join NASA’s astronaut training program in 1978. Six years later, aboard the space shuttleChallenger, he became the second African American in space. His next trip into orbit was to take place on the same shuttle on January 28, 1986, and McNair brought his sax along for the ride, intending to be the first to record an original piece of music in space. Why did this never happen? More… Discuss

EATING POPCORN REDUCES AD EFFECTIVENESS

Eating Popcorn Reduces Ad Effectiveness

Movie theater concessions may be pricey, but buying them could save you money in the long run. Researchers say eating popcorn or other snacks reduces the effectiveness of cinema advertising. They hypothesize that the process of chewing interferes with “subvocal pronunciation,” an automatic moving of the lips and mouth to silently pronounce the name of what is being advertised, that seems to help imprint the advertiser’s message in our minds. More… Discuss

The Valentich Disappearance (1978)

On October 21, 1978, 20-year-old Frederick Valentich disappeared while piloting a Cessna light aircraft over Australia. He was supposed to land at King Island, pick up a few friends, and return to Moorabbin Airport, but during his flight, he reported to air traffic control that a strange aircraft was flying close above him. No trace of Valentich or his aircraft was ever found, prompting some to speculate that he had been captured by a UFO. What was the last thing he told flight controllersMore… Discuss

Wujing Zongyao

Chinese scholars completed the Wujing Zongyao in 1044 under orders from Emperor Renzong. A military compendium detailing techniques for warfare, it includes the earliest known gunpowder formulas. The Chinese initially used gunpowder to make firecrackers, but they soon took it onto the battlefield. The Wujing Zongyaogives instructions for creating a bomb that is launched from a catapult as well as for a poison-smoke bomb. It also describes a primitive version of what modern weapon? More… Discuss

Today’s Birthday: ARTHUR RIMBAUD (1854)

Arthur Rimbaud (1854)

Rimbaud may have put down his pen when he was just 19 to lead an international vagabond life as a merchant and trader, but in his few years as a poet, the precocious young Frenchman managed to create a literary legacy that would have a lasting influence on the symbolists and subsequent modern poets. He put his verbal virtuosity on display in works like “The Drunken Boat,” A Season in Hell, and Illuminations. Who shot and wounded Rimbaud during one of their many lovers’ quarrels? More…Discuss

CHILDREN MAY BENEFIT FROM ONLINE HEALTH RECORDS

Children May Benefit from Online Health Records

Parents who access their babies’ health records online are more likely to take their children to all of their recommended well visits and may also be more likely to keep youngsters up to date on their vaccinations. After all, it is possible that parents who take advantage of these sorts of tools are simply more proactive than others when it comes to their children’s healthcare. Still, it does appear that such online systems are a useful tool for caregivers. More… Discuss

NANOBODIES

Nanobodies

In the 1980s, research on monoclonal antibodiesantibodies mass produced in a laboratory to target a single antigen—generated excitement for their potential applications in fighting disease, especially cancer. However, their effectiveness in disease treatment has been limited. Today, a much smaller type of monoclonal antibody called a nanobody is being researched to treat diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s. Nanobodies were discovered during unrelated research on what animal? More… Discuss
