this pressed for your safety: Christmas decorations that could kill you

Christmas decorations that could kill you

Christmas decorations that could kill you

Keep these potentially deadly decorations out of reach of pets and children… and very curious adults.

Let’s face it: even as an adult, shiny objects are pretty enticing. Now just imagine how wondrous they seem to children and animals. While tinsel isn’t toxic, it can cause problems if ingested, especially for pets, as the foreign object could twist and tangle up in their intestines.

iStock

Though they are less toxic to humans than once believed, poinsettias can cause extreme discomfort when ingested. If your toddler has a bite, it can cause a mild stomachache, diarrhea, and vomiting. It is likely that people with a latex allergy will be allergic to poinsettias as well, since they both share similar proteins, and a severe reaction shouldn’t be treated lightly. Animals that nibble on these plants will likely experience mouth and stomach irritation and occasional vomiting.

Polaris was seeking the designation to allow owners to register the vehicles and use them on Connecticut roads.

The Waterbury Republican-American reports the DMV sent a letter to Polaris last week saying the Slingshot more closely resembles an automobile, a designation that would require it to meet more stringent safety standards.

The DMV has suggested Polaris go to the state Legislature to create a new classification for the vehicle.

The state definition of a motorcycle excludes vehicles that have an enclosed driver’s seat and an enclosed motor, and the Slingshot has both.

Saint of the Day for Friday, December 19th, 2014: St. Nemesius

Today’s Holiday

Opalia (2014)

The ancient Roman fertility goddess Ops was known by several different names—among them Rhea, Cybele, Bona Dea, Magna Mater, Thya, and Tellus. She married Saturn and was the mother of Jupiter. She is usually portrayed as a matron, with a loaf of bread in her left hand and her right hand opened as if offering assistance. Not much is known about what actually took place during the Opalia, but it appears that women played an important role in the festival. Because Ops was a fertility goddess, she was often invoked by touching the earth. More… Discuss

Today’s Birthday

Reggie White (1961)

Affectionately nicknamed the “Minister of Defense,” a reference to his two very different careers, White was an ordained Baptist minister and a professional football player. The defensive lineman played in the National Football League for 15 seasons between 1985 and 2000, in that time leading the Green Bay Packers to two Super Bowls, including one victory, and claiming the league record for sacks. How was White affected by a rash of church arsons in the mid-90s? More… Discuss

President Taft Pardons William H. Van Schaick (1912)

More than 1,000 people died when the General Slocum, a passenger steamship, caught fire in New York’s East River in 1904. It was the city’s worst loss-of-life disaster until the attacks of September 11, 2001. Van Schaick, the ship’s captain, was convicted of negligence and failure to maintain fire safety equipment and received a 10-year sentence. He was paroled after serving 3½ years in prison and later pardoned by President Taft. Why were most of the passengers unable to escape the fire? More… Discuss

Rare Rhino on Brink of Extinction

A northern white rhino died at the San Diego Zoo this week, leaving only five in the world. Only one male remains, and is considered unable to reproduce naturally due to old age. An international team of experts is now considering ways to save the species, including the possibility of in vitro fertilization. Hopes for natural breeding were dashed earlier this year when a younger male died in October. Northern white rhinos have been hunted to near extinction for their horns. More… Discuss

article: The Ganges River: GANGES (GANGA) – view it on euzicasa

Article of the Day:

“The waves belong to the Ganges, not the Ganges to the waves. A man cannot realize God unless he gets rid of all such egotistic ideas as “I am such an important man” or “I am so and so”. Level the mound of “I” to the ground by dissolving it with tears of devotion.”

Ramakrishna, as quoted in The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna (1942) as translated by Swami Nikhilananda, p. 385

The Ganges River

Sacred to Hindus, the 1,560-mile (2,510-km) Ganges River in northern India rises from the Gangotri glacier in the Himalayas and empties into the Bay of Bengal after branching into many distributaries. Although the river is highly polluted due to its proximity to major population centers, a rare species of freshwater dolphin and a critically endangered type of shark live in its waters, and its fertile plain supports many crops. About how many people are thought to live in the Ganges basin? More… Discuss
